If you are looking for accommodation to stay on the Basque coast, l'Escale is the hostel for you. This is a charming, calm and pleasant place, where you simply feel good. A stone's throw from the ocean, in the center of Guéthary, the location is ideal. You can also rent surfboards on site. I recommend 100%.

Beautiful hostel! You can tell a lot of time and effort has gone into this space. The kitchen is really big and has everything you need. The location is perfect, it’s a short walk to the town centre with cafes and shops and a short walk to the beach. Ella was so helpful and lovely I would highly recommend.

L'escale Is a Newly Renovated, Traditional Basque House
After travelling and living around the world for the past 8 years, I came to realise that home was actually one of the best place to be. And so, the idea of creating L'escale Surf Hostel became a project. L’escale used to be an hotel and restaurant for many years. Then it became the house I grew up into and that my parents ran as a bed & breakfast for the past 20 years.
Whilst we have kept many elements of the traditional Basque house, we have installed a brand new kitchen, designed a cosy surf-themed common area and renovated the dorm rooms. Each dorm room has its own bathroom and the bunk beds have homemade curtains ensuring you have privacy and a great nights sleep. We want L'escale to feel more like a home than a hostel so we have put a lot of thought into the decor, buying most of the furniture secondhand, making the terrace table and couch out of wooden pallets and restoring antiques owned by my grandmother. We even have an old-school collection of french surf magazines that belonged to my Dad.
I feel so lucky to be able to meet people from around the world with so many stories and help them discover and enjoy my home.
